South Australia has quite a few stunning locations to visit as well as a wonderful range of events to attend. If you plan on travelling to Australia and find yourself in the southern states, read on for some great things to see and do.
Go to the Adelaide Central Market
At 140 years old, this is one of the oldest undercover markets in the world and one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. It is popular with tourists and locals alike and has over 70 vendors to buy fresh produce including fruits, vegetables, meats, and poultry. It is open all year round and also contains cafes and restaurants where you can experience some of the most delectable food and beverages in Australia.
Visit Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is located about 112 kilometres off the coast southwest from Adelaide. There are a lot of things to do on the island which is about 4405 km2 (1701 sq miles). Some of the most popular attractions include ranger-guided walks to see barking sea lions at the Seal Bay Conservation Park, Flinders Chase National Park which has many walking trails and camping locations, and the Mount Thisby lookout which offers a 360-degree view of the island. There is also South Australia’s only eucalyptus oil distillery as well as operational lighthouses dotted around the island.
Attend a horse racing event
Morphettville Racecourse, which is located just outside of the Adelaide city centre, is home to many famous horse races which include the Australasian Oaks, the Robert Sangster Stakes, and the Adelaide Cup. Be sure to keep up on the Morphettville racing odds if you fancy having a punt at the races, with the main Group 1 races occurring in April each year during the SAJC Autumn Carnival. Morphettville is considered one of the best racecourses in Australia.

This venue hosts many sports, mainly Australian Rules Football and cricket but also soccer, rugby, and tennis. It was opened in 1871 and has been upgraded over the years with new stands being placed or added on to increase capacity. Concerts have also been held at the venue since 1977 with the next one projected to be in November 2022 with Guns N’ Roses playing as part of their world tour. There are also several statues at the venue portraying Australian sports legends such as cricketers Donald Bradman, Jason Gillespie, and Darren Lehmann and footballers such as Malcolm Blight and Ken Farmer.
Check out Port Lincoln
Dubbed the ‘seafood capital of Australia’, Port Lincoln is located about 250 kilometres south of Adelaide on the Boston Bay. The town has several Heritage-listed locations including the Port Lincoln Railway Station located at the Railway Terrace and Dorset Place which is the Old Mill Lookout. If you are into water-related activities, you can go shark cage diving, scuba diving, game fishing, and yachting. It is also home to Tony Santic, a tuna farmer who is the owner of thoroughbred racehorse Makybe Diva, the only horse to have won the prestigious Melbourne Cup 3 times.
It is also important to mention that South Australia is home to some of the best wineries and wines in the world as the climate in that part of the country is perfect for grape growing and winemaking so be sure to check out some of the many wine regions South Australia has to offer.
