  1. Some people believe that it is the birth-date of goddess Lakshmi, (the goddess of wealth).
  2. Others say that it is the marriage date of goddess Lakshmi with god Vishnu.
  3. Most people believes that it is the returning date of lord Rama after spending 14 years in the jungle. On this returning date, the people of “ayodhya” lighted up earthen diyas on the path of returning  to the palace of lord Rama, which can be the reason behind lighting the diya’s and candle’s.
